Nike and the NBA partnered to create a connected apparel experience that would fundamentally deepen fan engagement — turning the jersey from a piece of clothing into a living digital portal.
"Half a billion people follow basketball. Very few of them ever get inside the building."
Young basketball fans increasingly seek player connection through social media and digital channels rather than the conventional broadcast experience. The challenge was to meet them there — to create something that made wearing a jersey feel like an access pass, not just merchandise.
The NBA Connected Jersey functioned as a personalised digital portal tied to individual players. Scan the tag, and you unlock game highlights, exclusive merchandise drops, and curated content — including Spotify playlists selected by the player themselves. The jersey became the key to a relationship with the athlete, not just a representation of them.
The role spanned product strategy, stakeholder communication across Nike, NBA teams, and partners including Spotify and NBA 2K, plus performance tracking post-launch.
