A holiday commercial that addressed one of the defining cultural anxieties of the smartphone era: is technology pulling us apart from the people we love?
"The biggest fear wasn't that kids were ignoring family — it was that they didn't care."
Throughout a family holiday gathering, a teenage boy appears glued to his iPhone. He barely looks up. He's distracted, disengaged, seemingly present in body but absent in spirit. The family is concerned.
Then, on Christmas Eve, he gathers everyone together and plays a film on the TV — a beautifully edited collection of intimate family moments he had been quietly capturing all along. It's a handmade gift, made entirely on his iPhone using iMovie, built from love and observation.
The film was shot entirely from his perspective using an iPhone camera, with all editing done in iMovie. It featured a newly recorded Cat Power song made available on iTunes. Rather than demonstrating technology through product shots, the campaign let the product disappear into the story — and in doing so, demonstrated Apple's integrated ecosystem in the most compelling way possible.
